A Guru, a world within himself, is divine, and his depth is beyond the measure of this universe. By merely changing his outward appearance from time to time, he comes amidst us now and again, but he is free from the cycle of birth and death. Through committed devotion and blind faith, devotees must aspire to connect with that divine soul. The undisputed truth is that one can avail fleeting pleasures by connecting with the material world, but to experience eternal pleasures, one needs to connect with the Guru.

A Guru is the most distinguished of teachers. With no books in his hands, he carries spiritual knowledge and legacy within him. With devotion to a Guru and a hunger for knowledge, a Guru is ever prepared to share his wisdom with all. Treasures, conceit, and pride have no meaning and no value around a Guru. A Guru’s decisions are governed by his own mind. Even God cannot compel a Guru to do things, for the agreement between God and the Guru is: “I (Guru) will direct all my disciples to you (God), but you (God) will have to accept what I say.” The Guru further has the blessings from God that if he commits something to his disciple or if the words come out of his mouth, then God will have to honor those words.

Guru Bin Bhavnidhi Tarahi Na Koi
Jo Viranchi Sankar Sam Hoi

“Without the Guru, no one can cross the ocean of existence,
Even if one is as great as Brahma (the Creator) or Shiva (the Destroyer).”

This couplet indicates the supreme grandeur of a Guru. It means that anyone who shows full faith in a Guru’s divine beauty gets freed from all the evil thoughts and negative energies that trouble humans.

Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu
Gurur Devo Maheshwara
Gurur Sakshaat Param Brahma
Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah

“The Guru is Brahma,
The Guru is Vishnu,
The Guru is Maheshwara (Shiva),
The Guru is verily the Supreme Brahman. Salutations to that revered Guru.”

A Guru, who is venerable like Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, deserves complete respect and devotion from his disciples. The sacred duty of a Guru is to show his devotees the path to God and to enrich them with spiritual knowledge. Anyone who can successfully guide you to God is a true Guru and worthy of all respect.

Lord Shiva said to Parvati about the greatness of a Guru:

Guru Bhakti Vihinaysa Tapo
Vidya Vratam Kulam
Nishfalam Hi Maheshani
Kewalam Lok Lanjanam

“O Maheshani (Goddess Parvati), without devotion to the Guru, austerities, knowledge, vows, and noble lineage are all fruitless; they are merely for show in the world.”

This means that without veneration of the Guru, knowledge, penance, religious songs, and chanting of hymns are all useless. Just as we require a teacher to teach us in school, we require a Guru to grasp the ropes of spirituality. One can make oneself famous by adopting all worldly items, but to cross the sea of this materialistic world, one requires a Guru. Without a Guru, a devotee can neither achieve peace of mind nor reach God. The scriptures clearly state that parents are instrumental in giving birth to the body; however, the man hidden inside that body can only be revealed by a Guru. Once that hidden man is awakened, one realizes the higher purpose for which we have been given this human form: to praise God. Once a devotee takes refuge in a Guru and the Guru showers his grace upon him, the man becomes complete. At that stage, there are only three individuals: God, Guru, and the devotee. Once this stage has been attained, there no longer exist any false relationships, caste, creed, gender discrimination, or feelings of “yours” and “mine.” What exists is a true bond, peace, mercy, and religious duties. Also, at this point in time, communication with a Guru goes beyond the worldly realm of speech into the spiritual realm of telepathy.

A Guru is the main source of celestial light, from which the disciple obtains both social knowledge and spiritual knowledge. Those who went on a sincere search for a Guru and accepted him with all their faith and devotion found what they were seeking. It is written:

Jin Khojan Tin Payeeyan

“Those who seek, find.”

In a nutshell, a Guru is the divine soul. If you have accepted him and surrendered to him, it is said that if you call him with full devotion, no place is inaccessible for a Guru. He can reach you everywhere, and you can reach him from anywhere. Try to go in search of him, and God and Guru will not disappoint you. The divine incarnation will eventually take you before the divine himself.
